Background Makedonski Brod The municipality of Makedonski Brod had been one of the biggest ones in Macedonia. When the territorial division had taken place, three new municipalities derived from the same territory: M.Brod, Samokov and Plasnica. M.Brod extends along the river Treska and has 25 inhabited places.The terrirory is hilly and mountainous,with valleys and other smaller rivers. There are around 4000 inhabitants in the town and around 2000 in the other inhabited places. The river Treska divides the town of M.Brod into two parts, hence there is a legend about the origin of its name i.e.Brod (ship) is a synonym of crossing from one to the other side of the river bank. The approximate altitude of M.Brod is around 550 meters and it is surrounded by Pesjak, Busova, Baba and Dautica mountains. This region is one of the most beautiful, concerning its natural beauties. It disposes of various forests, rich pastures, plants, dolomit minerals, pure water springs etc. This is ecologically the cleanest region in Republic of Macedonia,which means ecologically healthy environment but it results in undeveloped industry and high unemployment rate of 46%. The variety of minerals,marble,rural tourism,bee-keeping and fishing are the perspectives of this region. Silika Mineral;Emo Ohrid;11 October Printing House-Pecatnici;Forest Economy organization and Tobaco Institute should be mentioned as major economic units. One of the most attractive touristic places is the ara called Pesna,where there is the cave with the biggest entrance at the Balcan. Actually,this is a sight to ruins connected to a part of the old Via Egnacia Road. Also, there are charches built many centuries ago. In the vilage of Slatina there are many caves with a rare beauty,but unfortunataly,they are not deeply accessible.Also,there are salty-wather springes,more than ten centuries old and areas rich in ferrous metals used from 15th-19th century.The village called Drenovo hasineral water spring and the village Slansko is rich in salthy water springs. Makedonski Brod perspectives are much bigger with completion of the artificial accumulation Kozjak and the possibility of connecting M.Brod to Skopje along the river Treska.Here,we shouldn't ommit the water-waste collecting system which provides clean water.
